U.S. military presence was on display last week in Africa. In southern Somalia, fire from a U.S. helicopter on Sept. 14 killed several al-Shabab rebels, among them Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, whom U.S. authorities accuse of al-Qaeda loyalties and responsibility for attacks on a hotel and an Israeli passenger plane in Mombasa in 2002.
Obama: I will not waver in pursuit of Mideast peace
“I will not waver in pursuit of peace” between Israelis and Palestinians, President Obama told world leaders at the United Nations today.
“The time has come to re-launch negotiations — without preconditions — that address the permanent-status issues: security for Israelis and Palestinians; borders, refugees and Jerusalem,” Obama declared. “The goal is clear: two states living side by side in peace and security — a Jewish State of Israel, with true security for all Israelis; and a viable, independent Palestinian state with contiguous territory that ends the occupation that began in 1967, and realizes the potential of the Palestinian people.”
Cuba prepares for UN resolution, U.S. renews blockade
“Not even in a state of war, do international conventions allow a blockade of food and medicines,” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriquez declared on Sept. 16. He was introducing reporters to a Cuban report to the United Nations General Assembly ahead of Cuba’s resolution against the U.S. blockade, set for an Oct. 28 Assembly vote.
