Hundreds of visitors came out to the village of Lares, Puerto Rico, to celebrate the anniversary of the revolutionary uprising of September 23, 1868, an attempt to liberate Puerto Rico from Spanish colonialism.
Indo-Pak tensions grow after terrorist attack
NEW DELHI – On Sept. 24, terrorists attacked a well-known Hindu temple, Akshar Dham, in Gujarat, one of India’s most communally polarized states. Two “fidayeen” (suicide squads) opened fire and hurled hand grenades indiscriminately; 37 died, with another 100 severely injured.

Peoples candidate sworn in as deputy mayor
NEWARK, N.J. – Ras Baraka, former people’s candidate for Councilman at Large here, was sworn in Sept. 27 as one of the city’s four Deputy Mayors. Jeannette Ramos, Ronald R. Rice and Evelyn Williams were the other three Deputies appointed by Mayor Sharpe James.
Lem Harris, farm labor writer, dies at 98
Lem Harris, a lifelong defender of family farmers and the rural working class, died Sept. 21. He was 98 years old. He was a member of the Executive Board of the Connecticut Communist Party, and was active in politics up to his death.

Bush axes kids health plan
The Bush administration is poised to launch an attack on children’s health care. Crying the blues of “fiscal prudence,” the president is withdrawing one-fourth of the federal financing of children’s health insurance coverage, exposing millions of children to illnesses that could be cured and/or stopped from getting worse.
