TeleSUR, a new television outlet, transmitted its signal throughout Latin America by satellite for the first time, July 24. The inaugural broadcast coincided with the 222nd birthday of liberator Simón Bolívar, dreamer of a united Americas and inspiration for the Bolivarian revolution shaking Latin America.

Brazilians protest assassination, demand arrests
Friends and family of Jean Charles de Menezes, the young Brazilian shot dead July 22 by British police acting under a shoot-to-kill policy, marched in protest Monday in Menezes’ hometown of Gonzaga in central Brazil.
Haitian priest Jean-Juste arrested
Haitian police arrested former political prisoner Father Gerald Jean-Juste July 21 and are holding him in Port-au-Prince’s Haitian National Penitentiary. Witnesses reported that the anti-Lavalas “Group of 184” supporters brutally assaulted Jean-Juste July 21 at the funeral of murdered journalist Jacques Roche. Police and UN forces moved in to protect Jean-Juste and then escorted him to a waiting police vehicle. He was taken to a nearby police station and placed in custody.
Cuba welcomes UN agency report
HAVANA — Speaking to the members of the Venceremos Brigade and the Puerto Rican Cuba solidarity group Brigada Juan Ruis Rivera on July 19 here, Cuban National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon charged that the U.S. government carries out terrorism and protects terrorists. His remarks were part of a discussion of anti-Cuban terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, the Cuban Five, and more.
Pastors for Peace arrive in Cuba
Pastors for Peace claimed a huge victory July 22 as a tired but excited group of 130 U.S. citizens crossed the U.S./Mexico border just before daybreak en route to Cuba with almost all of the 140 tons of humanitarian aid that had been collected by the Pastors for Peace Friendshipment Cuba Caravan. The group arrived in Cuba on July 23.
