Groups take on McCain privatization plan WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Aug. 14, marks the 73rd anniversary of the day the Social Security Act was signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In recognition of the program’s 73rd birthday, Americans United for Change was joined today by James Roosevelt, Jr., grandson of FDR; Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D - FL); Richard Trumka, secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO; and Edward Coyle, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans to celebrate 73 years of what has been called the most successful government program in the world and that has been credited with lifting America’s seniors from poverty and providing critical financial security for surviving spouses and people with disabilities.

Jose Pertierra is Venezuela’s U.S. lawyer. He is demanding that Luis Posada be returned to Panama to finish out jail time there in connection with an attempt with three others in 2000 to murder former Cuban President Fidel Castro, then in Panama City.

Africa says no to Pentagon
Plans to base the much-talked-about United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in Africa have been dropped for now. The U.S. government acknowledged defeat in its all-out campaign to convince any African ally to welcome the installation on its territory. AFRICOM will begin operations this October in Germany instead.

Lozano legacy lives on today

Calvin Morris. “Rudy Lozano’s footprints show us the way for activism in today’s historic struggles.” Morris, director of the Community Renewal Society opened a June 22 gathering of over 250 people paying tribute to the remarkable life of Rudy Lozano, cut short by an assassin’s bullet 25 years ago.

If we hadn’t seen it with our own eyes, my movie buddy and I would not believe all the amazing things that happened to Indiana Jones and his friends during his big adventure with the crystal skull. Indiana was blown up, shot at, and dropped from great distances, not just once or twice but for most of the entire two-hour film experience!
