NEW YORK — Labor activists are puzzled as to why a few important unions here have given their endorsement to incumbent Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the upcoming mayoral election. His tenure has been marked by bitter disputes with virtually all of the largest public sector unions in the city.

Hurricane Katrina has inflicted an immense and unspeakable tragedy on the people of the Gulf Coast. The situation grows worse by the hour. The Mayor of New Orleans estimates that thousands have died and as many as 100,000 may still be trapped in the flooded city. Without food or drinkable water, time is running out for these men, women and children.
Venezuela Matters
CHICAGO — During an Aug. 24 press conference with the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who denounced televangelist Pat Robertson’s call for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s assassination, the consul general of Venezuela, Martin Sanchez, announced a multimedia cultural exhibit called “Venezuela Matters.” The exhibit will open Oct. 13-14 at Chicago’s East River Art Center. And on Oct. 15, Afro-Venezuelan Day will be celebrated at Rainbow/PUSH headquarters here.

Librarians protest Patriot Act
A lawsuit filed by an unnamed member of the American Library Association in Connecticut brings out in the open the Bush administration’s efforts to monitor our reading habits under the USA Patriot Act. The suit comes at the same time as a House-Senate conference committee is moving to renew the act, passed by Congress in October 2001.
