Two trees

The following poem was inspired by a coincidence: two trees recently became prominent in the news at almost the same time. One was the so-called “white tree” in Jena, La., which had become a symbol of de facto racism on campus. The other, a chestnut tree outside the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, is dying from various diseases.

New group affirms African-Latino identity

CHICAGO — Over 200 people met at San Lucas United Church here Sept. 21 for the launching of the Afro-Latin@ Institute of Chicago. Its mission is to help strengthen research and build activist networks among Latinos of African descent in the United States.
