AARP hosts election debate in toss up district
WATERBURY, Conn. – The AARP held a debate between Jim Maloney (D) and Nancy Johnson (R) here Sept. 30. The forum focused on senior citizens issues, mainly a prescription drug benefit under Medicare, upholding and strengthening Social Security and health care. Nearly 400 senior citizens attended. Senior citizens’ voting turnout rate is usually higher than the general population’s.
Candidate promises living wage
BALTIMORE – Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Democratic candidate for governor, told a crowd of 1,500 here that she endorses and will push for an $11 an hour living wage for state employees, if elected.
Detroit unionists blast Bush war
DETROIT, Mich. – “The entire Democratic congressional delegation from Michigan, with the exception of one, voted no on war with Iraq,” Rep. Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick (D-Mich.) told an audience at the headquarters of Service Employees Union Local 79, Oct. 12. “Our delegation stood strong. The President was wrong on this one,” she told the cheering crowd.

Boston janitors continue strike with victories
BOSTON – Janitors in the Boston metropolitan area continued their strike into the second week as six contractors broke rank with the Maintenance Contractors of New England and agreed to sign interim agreements with the union. Over 2,000 janitors are now out on strike.

MADISON – Student leaders celebrated an Oct. 2 U.S. Court of Appeals decision that student fee policies here at the University of Wisconsin do not violate the Constitution.
School nurse: Put kids needs first
Recently a parent stopped by my office to thank me for taking care of her daughter while she was a student at the school where I work as a school nurse. Her daughter graduated in June and is now a college student.
